Crews are getting ready to build the new Slaughter Lane overpass for the Diverging Diamond Intersection at MoPac and Slaughter Lane. In preparation for this work, the existing Slaughter Lane roadway at MoPac will be closed and traffic will be shifted to a new temporary roadway just south of the intersection. The traffic shift is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 10, and is expected to be complete and open to motorists by 5 a.m. on Monday, June 11, weather permitting. Police officers will be on site to help direct traffic.
CHANGES TO EXPECT:
We understand the inconvenience this will cause and the increased travel time through the intersection. Crews are committed to getting the work done as quickly and safely as possible. We have put incentives in place to encourage the contractor to finish the work early. Conversely, the contractor faces penalties if the work is not completed on time. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to bring these needed safety and mobility improvements to the area.
Crews continue to work on sound walls, retaining walls, underground utilities, and ramp construction activities in various locations throughout the project limits. Excavation activities also continue in preparation for extending the MoPac mainlanes underneath Slaughter Lane and La Crosse Avenue.
Once the overpass is built, additional traffic shifts will take place to allow crews to construct and stripe the DDI. Work on the La Crosse Avenue overpass will begin once the DDI is open to traffic. The project is about 15% complete and on schedule to finish by early 2021, weather permitting.
In the coming weeks, crews will widen the pavement on north and southbound MoPac south of La Crosse, continue with excavation activities, and begin work on sound walls on the northwest side of MoPac. Crews are anticipated to begin work on the Slaughter Lane underpass by mid-summer and expect it to be open to traffic in late spring. Once work begins, lane modifications will occur. We will share additional details as we get closer.
